According to the British Crime Survey, people that have lived in new homes for less than a year are twice as likely to be burgled. Although the reasons for this can vary, there are things you can to protect your new property and stay one step ahead of the burglar. To avoid becoming another statistic, you should do everything you can to feel safe in your property, leaving nothing to chance.

In this article, we will provide you with tips and tricks to help you stay safe and secure in your new property. Let’s begin!

Anti Climb Paint

If you have just moved into a new property and you are serious about protecting it from intruders, anti climb paint can be a great deterrent. As a coating that doesn’t dry, it can make it hard for anyone trying to climb to get any purchase on the surface. The surface will remain slippery for as long as there is anti climb paint on it.

A wide range of products can be purchased to prevent intruders from climbing the walls to your property. Anti Vandal and Anti Climb Paints, also known as anti intruder paints, are coatings that never dry, leaving anyone that attempts to intrude on your property with paint all over them.

This type of coating can be used to easily identify an intruder if they have attempted to climb your walls, fences, drains, gates or drainpipes.

Change the Locks

When you move into any new property, one of the first things you should consider doing is changing the locks. You don’t always know who the previous owners of the property are or how many sets of keys there are floating about from previous tenants/owners or the ones before that, so you could be leaving the doors wide open for someone who lived in the property previously to walk right in.

For all you know, there could be 2, 3 or even 4 sets of keys still out there with previous owners. Even if you are moving into a rented property, you should still consider having the locks changed or asking the property landlord to do it for you.

For all it comes at a cost to have your locks changed, having them changed can be one of the most sensible and safest things you can do when you move into a new home. For peace of mind, get your locks changed by an experienced locksmith!

Moving into a New home? Here’s Some Advice to Stay Safe

Install Alarms

If you already have an alarm fitted in your home, then we’d advise you have it serviced to make sure it is set up and working correctly. You’ll also want to know what the code is for the unit and get it changed as soon as possible. This will give you peace of mind that previous owners can’t disable your alarm and walk right into your home.

If your home doesn’t have a burglar alarm then it’s a clever idea to get one installed. When you have just bought a new house, or even moved into a rented property, you might not have the funds available to have a full alarm system fitted. If this is the case, you should consider getting a dummy system fitted that will look exactly like a burglar alarm to help deter potential robbers. Your dummy box should be highly visible to neighbours and those passing by in the street.

Window Locks

Check that your new property has window locks fitted and obtain all sets of keys from the previous owners. If the keys to the locks don’t work or the windows don’t lock properly, you should call someone to come and look at them for you. Like your doors, you should do everything you can to make sure your locks are safe, secure and work properly. Having window locks that work properly will also help you to comply with the terms and conditions of your home insurance, in the event of a burglary.
